Multi-unit gîte and its outbuildings
The gîte “Le Château” includes a multi-unit gîte for 9 people with its annex on the ground floor (Hypocras), as well as 6 other outbuildings transformed into gîtes of different characteristics for 2 to 9 people.
A building steeped in history, the foundations of the “Château” date back more than 1000 years. Left abandoned for a long time, it was in in a state of deep disrepair when Christine and Jacky arrived in 2007 and fell under the spell of the building, whose potential they immediately saw.
They then set out to renovate it. After many years of hard work and a lot of passionate commitment, they managed to fit out the 8 gîtes within the grounds of the property. With only two paris of hands, but a lot of heart, it took them 8 years to complete the renovation work. In 2020, “Le Château” became ready to welcome guests, having finally regained its original splendour.

The Foundations
16th century. The village is reborn from its ashes following a terrible episode of the plague. The castle was rebuilt in its current location, far enough from the houses to distinguish itself from them and to ensure its safety. It is located at the bottom of the hill, at the confluence of the Galabre and Clouet ravines, and along a transhumance path that connects with the mountain on the other side of the torrent. The spiral staircase from this original building has been conserved. It leads to a modest dwelling (probably that of the lord of the castle) behind a beautiful door with a plaster ogee arch.
In the middle of the 17th century, the castle was enlarged and took on a rectangular shape, fitted with a mullioned window and a dovecote at each corner. It was closed off by a wall whose front entrance contained Tuscan style mouldings. The large room and its ceremonial fireplace are still visible today.
The Transformation
In the 18th century, the French Revolution disrupted the lives of the lords of the time, whose property and lands were seized. A long and difficult period followed when precarious living conditions and poor harvests got the better of the inhabitants who left for Digne-les-Bains. The village had to wait till the 1970s before coming back to life and becoming a residential commune.
In 1984, the discovery of an ichthyosaur fossil aroused the interest of geologists, which provided a new attraction to the valley. Following this, the entire territory of Haute Provence would soon become one of the largest European geological reserves labelled “Geopark” by UNESCO, the first of its kind in the world. It was during this context of transformation that Christine and Jacky renovated “Le Château”.
Since Christmas 2022 Nathalie and Frédéric have taken over the management, ready to welcome you to appreciate the charm of this place!
